SOFT, the Support Organisation for Trisomy, in Ireland,
is a voluntary group dedicated to providing support for
families of children born with Patau’s Syndrome
(Trisomy 13), Edwards’ Syndrome (Trisomy 18) and
related chromosomal disorders. Support is provided during
prenatal diagnosis, during the child’s life and
after the child’s passing. One in four of all pregnancies
end in miscarriage. A high proportion of T13 and T18 pregnancies
ends within 12 weeks of conception. It is rare for a pregnancy
to continue to full term. The incidence of T13 is approximately
1 in 5,000 of total births, while that of T18 is about
1 in 2,500.
SOFT
supports by putting families in contact with one another,
providing information, publishing a regular newsletter,
organising professional speakers, conferences and family
days and maintaining links with SOFT organisations world-wide.
The
SOFT booklet, Why My Baby, has been written by parents
who had a baby with a T13/18 syndrome or related disorder
and contains a significant amount of information on both
syndromes.
